RE: Faux Puff - Cobalt! NEW FUR
Hi Grace
I suspected that my Cobalt most likely hid Tuscan Terra, but wasn't sure because I bought one of her grandparents from someone else and don't know his hidden fur, so didn't now what Fascan hid for sure.
So, I bought Godfrey because he has Scottish Fold Champagne which we know is more recessive than Tuscan Terra and could never be hiding it. This way if my Cobalt gives Tuscan Terra I can be sure it came from her and not from the partner, Godfrey.
When I put them together I had 4 possibilities:
1 - The Cobalt girl gives Faux Cobalt and Godfrey gives Scottish Fold Champagne
2- The Cobalt girl gives the hidden fur and Godfrey gives Shabby Tabby Midnight
3 - The Cobalt girl gives Faux Cobalt and Godfrey gives Scottish Fold Champagne
4 - The Cobalt girl gives the hidden fur and Godfrey gives Shabby Tabby Midnight
and the more dominant fur will show.
My Cobalt girl had already given 3 Cobalts and no hidden fur, so I expected to get the hidden fur this time.
If the kitten I got was Scottish Fold Champagne or Shabby Tabby Midnight, then I would not have proved much because these furs could have come from either side.
But I would know the hidden fur is not Tuscan Terra, because if it was and that was the most recessive fur this cobalt cat has (the hidden), then it can't let the Scottish Fold Champagne or Shabby Tabby Midnight show. It would beat them to the foreground.
But if the kitten is Tuscan Terra (and that is what happened), then it surely came from the Cobalt mother because the father can't give that according to his shown fur.
Godfrey has Scottish Fold Champagne and the only more recessive fur that was available when he was bred, was Shabby Tabby Midnight. And he is not pure Champagne because one of the parents is Shabby Tabby Midnight.
The Champagne came from the background of Jocelina. The European Shorthair Grey & White No. 1 cat was hiding Scottish Fold Champagne and passed that. The Grey & White No. 1 was lost then. Can't be on this cat.
So, since I got Tuscan Terra, then I know Cobalt was hiding Tuscan Terra, and if it can hide it, then it is dominant to it.
There are other ways to prove dominance, but I wanted a quick shortcut based on my suspicion, to give us proof that we can use these 4 furs to pull the new Cobalt fur:
European Shorthair - Tuscan Terra
Chateau Cat - Cream Puff No. 1
Scottish Fold - Champagne
Shabby Tabby - Midnight
I will start breeding my starter with dominant furs starting next week to to find out more about what is dominant to Faux Cobalt and get a pure fur eventually.
I just had to wait to have enough cats to breed before I dedicated my starter to this. Sorry it took some time.
